On December 18, 2025, Anthropic shipped a feature that most of the tech press called a footnote. A way to give Claude reusable instruction sets — organized folders with a SKILL.md file at the center. Useful, sure. Revolutionary? Nobody thought so.
Ninety days later, the anthropics/skills GitHub repository has 87,000 stars. A marketplace called SkillsMP lists over 500,000 compatible skills. Garry Tan posted his personal Claude Code setup — 13 skills, MIT license, one-paste install — and it went viral, hit 20,000 GitHub stars, and trended on Product Hunt within 48 hours. Simon Willison called skills “maybe a bigger deal than MCP.” Developers are comparing the moment to the early days of npm.
What happened? The same thing that always happens when a standard hits the right abstraction level at the right time: everyone adopted it at once.
The key move Anthropic made wasn’t the technology. It was publishing SKILL.md as an open standard — not a proprietary plugin format, not a walled garden. The same file that works in Claude Code works in Cursor, Gemini CLI, OpenAI Codex CLI, Windsurf, and a dozen other tools. Suddenly every developer building a useful workflow had one place to put it that worked everywhere.
That’s the real story. Not that Claude got better. It’s that the way you teach AI agents got standardized — and the community ran with it faster than anyone predicted.

Strip away the hype and the mechanics are elegant in their simplicity. A skill is a folder. Inside that folder lives a SKILL.md file with two parts: YAML frontmatter that configures behavior, and markdown instructions that tell Claude what to do. That’s it.
What makes this architecture powerful is progressive disclosure — a three-tier loading system. First, Claude scans only the name and description (~100 tokens) to decide if a skill is relevant. If it is, the full SKILL.md body loads. Only then, if those instructions reference additional files, does Claude load those too. A skill can bundle dozens of reference files; if your task only needs one, the others never touch the context window.
The frontmatter controls more than just metadata. You can restrict which tools Claude uses, prevent Claude from triggering a skill automatically (critical for any skill with side effects), run the skill in an isolated subagent context, or make a skill background knowledge that Claude applies silently without a slash command.
Skills also support dynamic context injection — the ability to run a shell command at invocation time and inject its output into the skill prompt. A skill can pull live API data, the current git diff, or your team’s latest deployment status before Claude ever sees the task. This is where skills cross from “useful workflow template” into “live agent capability.”
Three Tiers, Thousands of Skills
The skills ecosystem has already stratified into something resembling npm’s early structure. There are official skills from tool vendors, verified community skills with real usage data, and an enormous long tail of personal and team-specific skills.
The Antigravity Awesome Skills library — 1,234 cross-compatible skills, 22,000 GitHub stars, installable with a single npx command — is the closest thing to a curated package manager the ecosystem has. The most telling signal: Remotion’s official skill hit 117K weekly installs within weeks of launch. It gives Claude deep knowledge of video rendering — animation curves, audio sync, 3D via Three.js, parametric video with Zod schemas — things a general-purpose model gets wrong without specialized context. This is the pattern. Framework-specific skills that encode domain expertise the base model doesn’t have.

The March 2026 Claude Code updates didn’t just add features — they turned skills from workflow templates into a programmable agent platform. Here’s what changed:
- Commands + Skills unified. The old .claude/commands/ and .claude/skills/ separation is gone. Skills are the recommended path going forward.
- /loop — autonomous recurring tasks. A lightweight cron job inside your Claude session. PR review every 20 minutes, test suite monitoring, deployment health checks — running unattended.
- Subagent execution with forked context. Skills can now spawn isolated subagents with their own context windows. Long research tasks run in parallel without contaminating your main conversation.
- HTTP lifecycle hooks. Skills can POST JSON to external URLs at lifecycle events — invocation, completion, errors. Webhooks into Slack, PagerDuty, your observability platform.
- Monorepo-aware discovery. Working in packages/frontend/? Claude Code automatically discovers skills in that package’s .claude/skills/ directory.
- Live change detection. Edit a skill file during a session — no restart needed. Claude picks up the change immediately.

The skills ecosystem is moving faster than enterprise governance frameworks. That’s not a reason to ignore it — it’s a reason to get ahead of it. Here’s the honest picture.
Skills can bundle Python and shell scripts. When a skill runs, those scripts execute in Claude’s environment with the same permissions as the invoking user. Two CVEs were already patched: CVE-2025-59536 (RCE via malicious hooks, CVSS 8.7) and CVE-2026-21852 (API key exfiltration, CVSS 5.3). Both were triggered by opening an untrusted repository.
Bottom line: Treat every skill like a software dependency. Never install skills from unknown sources on systems with production access. Maintain an approved skill allowlist for enterprise deployments.
- Does the skill’s allowed-tools scope match the minimum it needs? A skill that only needs to read files should never have bash write access.
- Is auto-invocation disabled on any skill with external side effects (API calls, file writes, deploys)?
- Are credentials isolated from skill content? API keys in SKILL.md are a supply chain vulnerability. Use env vars, never inline secrets.
- Are HTTP hooks logging to a centralized observability layer? In production agents, every skill-triggered action should be logged.
- For /loop tasks: who reviews what ran unattended overnight? Autonomous loops need audit trails.
Anthropic publishes an enterprise governance guide specifically for skills — covering risk assessment checklists, review steps for third-party skills, and deployment controls.
Deloitte rolled out Claude to 470,000 staff, established a Claude Center of Excellence, and ran a formal certification program — 15,000 employees certified. The pattern: skills deployment at scale requires a Center of Excellence model. Centralized vetting, role-based bundles, and documented standards. Not every developer picking skills from the community at will.
