Key Takeaway
Maturity assessments are most valuable when repeated quarterly, creating a trend line that demonstrates progress and identifies stalling dimensions early.
When to Use This Template
Use this assessment when establishing a baseline for AI maturity, building a case for AI investment, or tracking progress on transformation initiatives. The scorecard is designed to be completed by a cross-functional team including engineering, data, product, and leadership representatives. Run it quarterly to track trends and identify dimensions that are improving or stalling.

How to Score
For each dimension, gather evidence from the team and assign a score from 1 to 5. Require specific evidence for each score level; do not allow aspirational scoring. The overall maturity score is the average across all six dimensions. Most organizations starting their AI journey score between 1.5 and 2.5. Organizations with established AI practices typically score 3.0 to 3.5. Scores above 4.0 indicate mature AI operations, which is uncommon outside of AI-native companies.

AI Maturity Scorecard with scoring rubrics and trend tracking
Have each team member complete the assessment independently before discussing as a group. The disagreements between individual scores reveal the most important insights: they highlight areas where different parts of the organization have different perceptions of maturity.
